As part of the collective (ATZGEREI), I had the great pleasure of winning the pitch to design the ECR (European Society of Radiology) congress. Every year, the European Society of Radiology holds a major radiology congress in Vienna, and we were to design the entire UNI-City venue.
Radiology is a fascinating and versatile field whose applications reach far beyond medicine. This technology allows us to discover the hidden treasures of the past and of nature by giving us a glimpse of things that are invisible to the naked eye. Whether it is examining the inside of the human body to diagnose and treat disease, or uncovering the secrets of historical artworks, radiology plays a crucial role in exploring and understanding the world around us. With constant advances in technology, radiology keeps opening up new ways to expand our knowledge and understanding. In short, radiology is an inexhaustible adventure full of discovery and insight.
The goal was to use our visualisations to let every visitor experience the fascination of looking inside the human body. I drew inspiration from Baroque subject matter, with its fall of light and refined palette of gold and copper. I chose painting as the medium, however, because it has a centuries-long tradition of depicting the body.
Romanticism sought to portray people's inner lives through idealised landscapes. I used this aesthetic to create a connection between art and radiology, which lets us look inside the body.
I combined depictions of people and bodies with painterly elements from Romanticism, creating the illusion that one could look into the body and discover a landscape within. The boundary between outside and inside was represented by a network of circuit boards, which I took from the cube on the poster.
Unfortunately, ECR 2020 had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, shortly after I had sent off the print-ready files. Even so, being part of this project was an unforgettable experience for me, and I am proud of the result of my work, which unites the long tradition of depicting the body in painting with the modern technology of radiology.
